Shopify's Transition to GraphQL: What It Means for Your Apps

We wanted to bring an important update to your attention regarding Shopify's API development. Starting April 1, 2025, Shopify will require all new public apps submitted to the App Store to exclusively use GraphQL. Existing custom apps or public apps that are already published can continue to use the REST Admin API, but it's now being marked as legacy.

Why the Shift to GraphQL?

Shopify has chosen GraphQL as the primary API due to its superior performance and feature parity. Unlike REST, GraphQL allows you to request only the specific data you need, reducing the need for over-fetching and making your apps more efficient. This means faster responses, more precise queries, and ultimately a smoother experience for your customers. As Shopify continues to invest in GraphQL, all new features and improvements will be made to this API, while REST will no longer receive updates.

How Does This Impact You?

If your store is already using custom apps or extensions built on the REST Admin API, you won’t need to make any immediate changes – your apps will continue to function as expected. However, for new app developments and updates, we’ll be focusing on building with GraphQL to ensure optimal performance and future-proofing your solutions.
